Omega-3 - the Essential Fatty Acids

Recently I read an article from Victoria Boutenko about greens and omega-3, and I found the answer to why Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) are important yet when over-consuming oily stuffs, we can have lots of health problems including diabetes. All these are about the ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 consumption and the state of the EFA (fresh or rancid).

While I was taking my Holistic Nutrition many years ago, I was taught that we must make sure the ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 is balanced. If the ratio is off-balance, we will have many problems to our health, mentally and physically in addition to the ability to handle pain. But the course was not thorough enough (or may be the research was not published yet...?) about the reason behind it.

In our modern society, there are many sources of EFA-rich food, such as almond nuts, walnut, sesame seeds, olive oil etc. However, their amount of omega-3 is less than Omega-6. If we only consume these products we might end up eating more omega-6 than we need and still lack of Omega-3.

I had a friend asked me once, where should we get more of the omega-3 from food other than fish/fish oil (even fishes from fish farms are being fed grain which are rich in omega-6). I had only one answer that time -- Flaxseed/flaxseed oil. But I usually received the same response: the flaxseed has less-than-pleasant-taste plus it gone rancid easily and flaxseed oil was not easily available that time.

Now, we know there are have more omega-3 rich food easily available to us -- Greens and chia seeds. Greens are easily available from any market, and chia seeds are getting more popular and easily available now. Its easy and convenient to have more healthy omega-3 in our life now.

The benefits of increasing your omega-3 intake included but not limited to:
* reduce cholesterol level in blood
* lower high blood pressure
* increase physical agility
* improve mental clarity
* improve depression, anxiety and mood disorders
* prevent obesity and diabetes and etc

Well, you can still consume nuts and seeds (including the tasty almond milk!!). Just need to remember moderate is the key to health, and try to balance out with more chia seeds and greens that are rich in Omega-3 and you will do fine!

SIMILAC Infant Formula Over 50% Sugars

I have heard that most of the infant formulas in the market contain lots of sugar, but I didn't really dig on it to find out how much, nor did I expect that it would be more than 50%!

Similac, I used to think that being such highly recommended brand by pediatrician, should be better in nutritional quality than the others. I could never have been more wrong. While this is about Similac in America (not sure where our Similac is manufactured), but I don't think the formula will be much different for those Similac that we have here in Malaysia.

(NaturalNews) It has been a few days since Abbott Laboratories, makers of Similac infant formula, issued a recall after discovering some of its products may have been contaminated with beetles (and beetle larvae). The mainstream media ran with this story and parents everywhere suddenly got concerned that their babies might be drinking beetle parts.

But are beetles really the scariest thing in Similac? Not by a long shot if you know anything about nutrition.

I purchased a 24-oz container of Similac Go & Grow soy-based formula, emblazoned with a cute teddy bear on the front label and positioned towards "9 to 24 months." It comes with the claim "balanced nutrition for older babies." But is it really balanced nutrition?

42.6% corn syrup solids
The very first ingredient, shown right on the label, is 42.6% CORN SYRUP SOLIDS.

Stop right there. Are they saying that Similac infant formula is 42.6% corn syrup solids? That's a form of highly processed sugar. Is this really what infants need -- nearly half their formula to be made of corn syrup sugars? Nutritionists would strongly disagree.

But it gets even better: The next ingredient is 14.7% SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE. Most soy protein, as NaturalNews readers already know, is derived from a hexane chemical extraction process that we've covered in previous articles: http://www.naturalnews.com/026303_soy_protein_hexane.html

Beyond the hexane question, did you know that 91% of the soy fields grown in America contain genetically modified soy? The Similac can does not say "non-GMO soy" because it's not required to be put on the label (thanks to the FDA shell game). But Consumer Reports actually bought and tested infant formula for genetically engineered DNA and found that Similac was using GMO soy in their products. The next ingredient in the Similac can I bought is 11.5% HIGH OLEIC SAFFLOWER OIL, followed by 10.1% SUGAR (SUCROSE).

If you're doing the math on this, that makes Similac 52.7% sugar (corn syrup solids plus the sucrose) with soy protein. I can hardly think of a better way to raise diabetic, obese children than to feed them a diet that's over 50 percent sugar. It also seems like a great way to get infants addicted to sugar -- a curse that will haunt them through the rest of their lives.

Next on the list is 8.4% SOY OIL (most likely from GMO soybeans, too) and then 7.8% COCONUT OIL (which is, in my opinion, the only healthy ingredient in the entire product).

Basically, then, this Similac product is sugared-up soy protein with safflower and soy oil.

Plus it has some chemical "vitamins" on the label such as CYANOCOBALAMIN, the cheapest form of vitamin B-12 available to food manufacturers. It actually binds the vitamin to a cyanide molecule, just in case you were wondering.

As wikipedia explains, "B12 refers to a group of cobalt-containing vitamer compounds known as cobalamins: these include cyanocobalamin (an artifact formed as a result of the use of cyanide in the purification procedures)."

It then adds, "the cyanocobalamin form of B12 does not occur in nature normally, but is a byproduct of the fact that other forms of B12 are avid binders of cyanide (-CN) which they pick up in the process of activated charcoal purification of the vitamin after it is made by bacteria in the commercial process. Since the cyanocobalamin form of B12 is easy to crystallize and is not sensitive to air-oxidation, it is typically used as a form of B12 for food additives and in many common multivitamins." Why Similac should have been recalled long before the beetle incident
With this in mind, what we really have with Similac infant formula is powered sugars, genetically modified soy protein, more sugar, safflower and soy oils, a bit of coconut oil and some vitamin chemicals made with cyanide molecules. They also throw in some DHA to make moms think it must somehow resemble breast milk fats.

Are you beginning to see why the beetles are the least of the problems with this product?

Keep in mind that ignorant moms are feeding this stuff to their babies every single day! They think it's good for their babies because they don't take the time to read ingredient labels (or they are unable to understand what the labels mean). But make no mistake: I can't think of a single informed nutritionist who would recommend feeding babies a powder that's more than 50% sugar combined with genetically modified soy protein. To do so is actually nutritional child abuse in my view.

That's why I say Similac should be recalled just based on what's on the label! In my opinion, this is a dangerous combination of sugars and genetically modified ingredients that are likely to promote diabetes, obesity and nutritional imbalances in babies. To feed this to babies is to nutritionally cause them harm, in my opinion... and to think that Abbott Laboratories is making money selling this sugared-up GMO soy protein to consumers just makes me sick.

I think their slogan should be something like, "Similac - Creating tomorrow's diabetics, one baby at a time."

To imagine that this could somehow be a replacement for the rich, complex nutritional abundance of mother's milk is nutritionally insane.

Ridiculously overpriced
With Similac, there's also the price issue. Considering how cheap these ingredients are, this product seems ridiculously overpriced. If you really wanted to feed your baby something almost identical to this, you could just buy your own table sugar (cheaper than dirt), isolated soy protein (also cheaper than dirt), safflower oil (almost cheaper than dirt) and some coconut oil or flax oil (not so cheap, but you don't need to use much) then mix it all up and add water.

But what mom in her right mind would do such a crazy thing? No mom in her right mind would mix up 50% table sugar in a bottle and feed it to her baby, but that's essentially what she's doing when feeding her baby this variety of Similac that I purchased.

Nutritional insanity has reached a new low with Similac, I submit, and the beetles are the least of the problems with this product line that borders on "nutritional child abuse."

There should seriously be a law against infant formula being made with corn syrup solids and sucrose, not to mention GMO ingredients.

Spread the word, folks. That's the only way people will find out the truth about this and start choosing something that's healthier for their babies. If we hope to have healthy adults in the future, we have to stop nutritionally abusing them when they're infants.

Is supplement our friend or foe?

Supplements are so common now a days that we find a lot of people consume supplements daily. And the types of supplements usually we can find from the stores included antioxidant, single nutrient supplements, vitamins etc. But do all these supplements provide benefits to our body? Or will it bring harm to us?

Does that mean that we should not take supplements at all? Actually, supplements are encouraged by many parties in view of the highly polluted environment that we are staying in, in addition to the nutrient-poor + chemical-rich foods that we are ingesting in the modern world.

My Fav Green Smoothies - Using Thermomix

I have been using Vitamix for almost 2 years to make all my smoothies, be it green smoothies or fruits smoothies. And I love it. But now, I have discovered a new tool to make my smoothies, THERMOMIX!! And the best thing is it does not heat up the smoothies like Vitamix!

Have been using my Thermomix for 2 weeks and love it so much! Other than using it to blend smoothies, I finally can make homemade pau/bread on my own, and it is so easy! Grinding dry seeds has never been faster and easier, and without the worry of heating the seeds up before they are ground. Cooking with less heat yielded nice tasting and juicy vegetables, plus there is no need to stand there to stir. Just dump everything in and press the button and wait for a few minutes. I even make use of the few minutes to clean up the preparation work. It saves time and energy, no oily kitchen, no fussy cleaning procedure, but delicious and nutritious homemade dishes. Really salute the person who invented the machine.

Former White House press secretary Tony Snow died in July 2008 at the age of 53, following a series of chemotherapy treatments for colon cancer. In 2005, Snow had his colon removed and underwent six months of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with colon cancer. Two years later (2007), Snow underwent surgery to remove a growth in his abdominal area, near the site of the original cancer. "This is a very treatable condition," said Dr. Allyson Ocean, a gastrointestinal oncologist at Weill Cornell Medical College. "Many patients, because of the therapies we have, are able to work and live full lives with quality while they're being treated. Anyone who looks at this as a death sentence is wrong." But of course we now know, Dr. Ocean was dead wrong.

The media headlines proclaimed Snow died from colon cancer, although they knew he didn't have a colon anymore. Apparently, the malignant cancer had "returned" (from where?) and "spread" to the liver and elsewhere in his body. In actual fact, the colon surgery severely restricted his normal eliminative functions, thereby overburdening the liver and tissue fluids with toxic waste. The previous series of chemo-treatments inflamed and irreversibly damaged a large number of cells in his body, and also impaired his immune system -- a perfect recipe for growing new cancers. Now unable to heal the causes of the original cancer (in addition to the newly created ones), Snow's body developed new cancers in the liver and other parts of the body.

The mainstream media, of course, still insist Snow died from colon cancer, thus perpetuating the myth that it is only the cancer that kills people, not the treatment. Nobody seems to raise the important point that it is extremely difficult for a cancer patient to actually heal from this condition while being subjected to the systemic poisons of chemotherapy and deadly radiation. If you are bitten by a poisonous snake and don't get an antidote for it, isn't it likely that your body becomes overwhelmed by the poison and, therefore, cannot function anymore?

Before Tony Snow began his chemo-treatments for his second colon cancer, he still looked healthy and strong. But after a few weeks into his treatment, he started to develop a coarse voice, looked frail, turned gray and lost his hair. Did the cancer do all this to him? Certainly not. Cancer doesn't do such a thing, but chemical poisoning does. He actually looked more ill than someone who has been bitten by a poisonous snake.

Does the mainstream media ever report about the overwhelming scientific evidence that shows chemotherapy has zero benefits in the five-year survival rate of colon cancer patients? Or how many oncologists stand up for their cancer patients and protect them against chemotherapy treatment which they very well know can cause them to die far more quickly than if they received no treatment at all? Can you trustingly place your life into their hands when you know that most of them would not even consider chemotherapy for themselves if they were diagnosed with cancer? What do they know that you don't? The news is spreading fast that in the United States physician-caused fatalities now exceed 750,000 each year. Perhaps, many doctors no longer trust in what they practice, for good reasons.

"Most cancer patients in this country die of chemotherapy... Chemotherapy does not eliminate breast, colon or lung cancers. This fact has been documented for over a decade. Yet doctors still use chemotherapy for these tumors... Women with breast cancer are likely to die faster with chemo than without it." - Alan Levin, M.D.

An investigation by the Department of Radiation Oncology, Northern Sydney Cancer Centre, Australia, into the contribution of chemotherapy to 5-year survival in 22 major adult malignancies, showed startling results: The overall contribution of curative and adjuvant cytotoxic chemotherapy to 5-year survival in adults was estimated to be 2.3% in Australia and 2.1% in the USA." [Royal North Shore Hospital Clin Oncol (R Coll Radiol) 2005 Jun;17(4):294.]

The research covered data from the Cancer Registry in Australia and the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results in the USA for the year 1998. The current 5-year relative adult survival rate for cancer in Australia is over 60%, and no less than that in the USA. By comparison, a mere 2.3% contribution of chemotherapy to cancer survival does not justify the massive expense involved and the tremendous suffering patients experience because of severe, toxic side effects resulting from this treatment. With a meager success rate of 2.3%, selling chemotherapy as a medical treatment (instead of a scam), is one of the greatest fraudulent acts ever committed. The average chemotherapy earns the medical establishment a whopping $300,000 to $1,000,000 each year, and has so far earned those who promote this pseudo-medication (poison) over 1 trillion dollars. It's no surprise that the medical establishment tries to keep this scam alive for as long as possible.

In 1990, the highly respected German epidemiologist, Dr. Ulrich Abel from the Tumor Clinic of the University of Heidelberg, conducted the most comprehensive investigation of every major clinical study on chemotherapy drugs ever done. Abel contacted 350 medical centers and asked them to send him anything they had ever published on chemotherapy. He also reviewed and analyzed thousands of scientific articles published in the most prestigious medical journals. It took Abel several years to collect and evaluate the data. Abel's epidemiological study, which was published on August 10, 1991 in The Lancet, should have alerted every doctor and cancer patient about the risks of one of the most common treatments used for cancer and other diseases. In his paper, Abel came to the conclusion that the overall success rate of chemotherapy was "appalling." According to this report, there was no scientific evidence available in any existing study to show that chemotherapy can "extend in any appreciable way the lives of patients suffering from the most common organic cancers."

Abel points out that chemotherapy rarely improves the quality of life. He describes chemotherapy as "a scientific wasteland" and states that even though there is no scientific evidence that chemotherapy works, neither doctor nor patient is willing to give up on it. The mainstream media has never reported on this hugely important study, which is hardly surprising, given the enormous vested interests of the groups that sponsor the media, that is, the pharmaceutical companies. A recent search turned up exactly zero reviews of Abel's work in American journals, even though it was published in 1990. I believe this is not because his work was unimportant -- but because it is irrefutable.

The truth of the matter would be far too costly for the pharmaceutical industry to bear, thus making it unacceptable. If the mass media reported the truth that medical drugs, including chemotherapy drugs, are used to practically commit genocide in the U.S. and the world, their best sponsors (the pharmaceutical companies) would have to withdraw their misleading advertisements from the television media, radio stations, magazines, and newspapers. But neither group wants to go bankrupt.

Many doctors go as far as prescribing chemotherapy drugs to patients for malignancies that are far too advanced for surgery, with the full knowledge that there are no benefits at all. Yet they claim chemotherapy to be an effective cancer treatment, and their unsuspecting patients believe that "effective" equals "cure." The doctors, of course, refer to the FDA's definition of an "effective" drug, one which achieves a 50% or more reduction in tumor size for 28 days. They neglect to tell their patients that there is no correlation whatsoever between shrinking tumors for 28 days and curing the cancer or extending life. Temporary tumor shrinkage through chemotherapy has never been shown to cure cancer or to extend life. In other words, you can live with an untreated tumor for just as long as you would with one that has been shrunken or been eliminated by chemotherapy (or radiation).

Chemotherapy has never been shown to have curative effects for cancer. By contrast, the body can still cure itself, which it actually tries to do by developing cancer. Cancer is more a healing response than it is a disease. The "disease" is the body's attempt to cure itself of an existing imbalance. And sometimes, this healing response continues even if a person is subjected to chemotherapy (and/or radiation). Unfortunately, as the previously mentioned research has demonstrated, the chances for a real cure are greatly reduced when patients are treated with chemotherapy drugs.

The side effects of the treatment can be horrendous and heartbreaking for both patients and their loved ones, all in the name of trustworthy medical treatment. Although the drug treatment comes with the promise to improve the patient's quality of life, it is just common sense that a drug that makes them throw up and lose their hair, while wrecking their immune system, is doing the exact opposite. Chemo-therapy can give the patient life-threatening mouth sores. It attacks the immune system by destroying billions of immune cells (white blood cells). Its deadly poisons inflame every part of the body. The drugs can slough off the entire lining of their intestines. The most common side effect experienced among chemo patients is their complete lack of energy. The new additional drugs now given to many chemo patients may prevent the patient from noticing some of the side effects, but they hardly reduce the immensely destructive and suppressive effect of the chemotherapy itself. Remember, the reason chemotherapy can shrink some tumors is because it causes massive destruction in the body.

If you have cancer, you may think that feeling tired is just part of the disease. This rarely is the case. Feeling unusually tired is more likely due to anemia, a common side effect of most chemotherapy drugs. Chemo drugs can dramatically decrease your red blood cell levels, and this reduces oxygen availability to the 60-100 trillion cells of your body. You can literally feel the energy being zapped from every cell of your body -- a physical death without dying. Chemo-caused fatigue has a negative impact on day-to-day activities in 89% of all patients. With no energy, there can be no joy and no hope, and all bodily functions become subdued.

One long-term side effect is that these patients' bodies can no longer respond to nutritional or immune-strengthening approaches to cancerous tumors. All of this may explain why cancer patients who do not receive any treatment at all, have an up to four times higher remission rate than those who receive treatment. The sad thing is that chemotherapy does not cure 96% to 98% of all cancers anyway. Conclusive evidence (for the majority of cancers) that chemotherapy has any positive influence on survival or quality of life does not exist.

To promote chemotherapy as a treatment for cancer is misleading, to say the least. By permanently damaging the body's immune system and other important parts, chemo-therapy has become a leading cause of treatment-caused diseases such as heart disease, liver disease, intestinal diseases, diseases of the immune system, infections, brain diseases, pain disorders, and rapid aging.

Before committing themselves to being poisoned, cancer patients need to question their doctors and ask them to produce the research or evidence that shrinking a tumor actually translates to any increase in survival. If they tell you that chemotherapy is your best chance of surviving, you will know they are lying or are simply misinformed. As Abel's research clearly demonstrated, there is no such evidence anywhere to be found in the medical literature. Subjecting patients to chemotherapy robs them of a fair chance of finding or responding to a real cure and deserves criminal prosecution.

Thousands of scientific studies prove that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can prevent cancer and other diseases. Not only are these foods low in calories, they are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and beneficial plant chemicals. More specifically, cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, and kale have been shown to be especially potent cancer fighters. While the sulfur-like odor of cruciferous vegetables may make them less desirable than other vegetables, the very chemical that causes this potent smell provides the most impressive protection against cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables: the benefits
Cruciferous vegetables contain many plant chemicals that are associated with a lower risk of cancer. By stimulating the body to produce enzymes which break down cancer-causing substances, these naturally occurring chemicals help slow the growth of cancer cells in the breast, endometrium, lung, colon, liver, and cervix. In addition, various studies have associated diets high in cruciferous vegetables with lower risks of lung, stomach, colorectal, bladder, and prostate cancers.

Guidelines for consumption of curciferious veggies
A small amount of cruciferous vegetables goes a long way. One clinical study showed that men between the ages of 40 and 64 who ate 3 or more half-cup servings of cruciferous vegetables a week were 41 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer. Another study among men and women ranging in age from 50 to 74 showed participants who ate an average of 3.7 half-cup servings of cooked broccoli weekly were 50 percent less likely to develop colorectal cancer as subjects who said they never ate broccoli. Researchers have also discovered that the beneficial plant chemicals in cruciferous vegetables work together to produce a greater cancer fighting effect.

Incorporating cruciferous veggies into your diet
Incorporating cruciferous vegetables into your diet is easier and more delicious than you might think. To take advantage of their cancer fighting potential, add a half-cup serving of any of the following a few times a week:
• Arugula
• Beet greens
• Bok choy
• Broccoli
• Broccoli sprouts
• Brussels sprouts
• Cabbage
• Cauliflower
• Chinese cabbage
• Collard greens
• Daikon
• Horseradish
• Kale
• Kohlrabi

Spotlight on sprouts: super cruciferous broccoli
In part because it contains the cancer-fighting chemical sulforaphane, broccoli always tops the list of healthiest vegetables. However, broccoli sprouts contain 20 to 50 times more sulforaphane than mature broccoli. That means a few tablespoons of broccoli sprouts contain as much sulforaphane as is found in a pound of mature broccoli. When scientists at Johns Hopkins University fed broccoli sprouts to rats for several days and then gave them carcinogens, the animals developed smaller, fewer and slower-growing tumors than the ones that did not eat sprouts.

ODE TO A GREEN SMOOTHIE

As the Russian proverb says: New- is something old, that has been long forgotten. This summer I re-discovered green smoothies. What do I mean by green smoothie? Here is one of my favorite recipes: 4 ripe pears, 1 bunch of parsley and 1 big cup of water. Blended well. This smoothie looks very green, but it tastes like fruit. I like green smoothies so much that I bought an extra blender and placed it in my office, so that I could make green smoothies throughout the day. More than half of all the food I’ve had in last several months have been green smoothies. I have so much more energy and clarity that I have removed green juices from my diet. (Juicing has been something that I’ve been doing regularly for years.) Green smoothies have numerous benefits for human health.

1. Green smoothies are very nutritious. I believe that the ratio in them is optimal for human consumption: about 60% – ripe organic fruit mixed with about 40% – organic green vegetables.

2. Green smoothies are easy to digest. When blended well, all the valuable nutrients in these fruits and veggies become homogenized, or divided into such small particles that it becomes easy for the body to assimilate these nutrients, the green smoothies literally start to get absorbed in your mouth.

3. Green smoothies, as a posed to juices, are a complete food because they still have fiber.

4. Green smoothies belong to the most palatable dishes for all humans of all ages. With a ratio of fruits to veggies as 60:40 the fruit taste dominates the flavor, yet at the same time the green vegetables balance out the sweetness of the fruit, adding nice zest to it. Green smoothies are simply the best tasting dishes for the majority of adults and children. I always make extra smoothie and offer it to my friends and customers. Some of them eat a standard American diet. They all finished their big cup ofgreen smoothies with complements. They were quite surprised that something so green could taste so nice and sweet.

5. By consuming two or three cups of green smoothies daily you will consume enough of greens for the day to nourish your body, and they will be well assimilated. Many people do not consume enough of greens, even those who stay on a raw food diet. The molecule of chlorophyll has only one atom that makes it different from a molecule of human blood. According to teachings of Dr. Ann Wigmore, to consume chlorophyll is like receiving a healthy blood transfusion.

6. Green smoothies are easy to make, and quick to clean up after. Many people told me that they do not consume green juices on a regular basis because it is time consuming to prepare green juices and clean the equipment after juicing, or to drive to the juice bar.

7. Green smoothies are perfect food for children of all ages, including babies of six or more months old when introducing new food to them after mother’s milk. Of course you have to be careful and slowly increase the amount of smoothies to avoid food allergies.

8. When you consume your greens in the form of green smoothies, you can greatly reduce the consumption of oils and salt in your diet.

9. Regular consumption of Green smoothies forms a good habit of eating greens. Several people told me that after a couple of weeks of drinking green smoothies, they started to crave and enjoy eating more greens. Eating enough of green vegetable is often a problem with many people, especially in children.

10. Green smoothies can easily be freshly made at any juice bar, restaurant or health food store for the great convenience of health-oriented customers. Please bring a copy of this article to your local juice bar.

Chia Seeds - The Superfood

My Fav Green Smoothies

When my friends find out that I eat lots of raw green vegetables, the first reaction is always: Yuks, how do you eat that? Can that be eaten raw?

Well, yes, you can definitely eat the greens raw. They are so much more nutritious than the cooked greens. You just need to figure out how to make it nice and tasty so that you will be eating it everyday without feeling yucky.

How I make my green smoothies?
Below is my favorite:
1 bunch of spinach (or any greens eg bok choy, choy sum, kale)
1 japanese cucumber (with peel)
1 tomato (cut into quarter)
1 apple (peel, cored and cut into slices)

Dump everything into my blender (I'm using Vitamix and I love it coz it makes blending so much easier, but the normal blender would do well if you split up the ingredients and chop them into tiny pieces), with the tomato and apple at the bottom, then blend everything up. Sometimes I add a little bit of water just to make them blend easier and a few dates to make it sweeter. Then pour into a big glass and there, its ready! I enjoy the greenish yet delicious smoothies everyday as my breakfast in addition to other fruits.

Guidelines for consuming green is:
1. alternate the type of greens, don't stick to one type for too long
2. buy organic. Organic has much more nutrients than the commercially grown vegetables, besides, you don't have to worry about the pesticide/herbicide etc

Benefits of the Sun

Most of us don't realize that exposure to the sun is actually beneficial to us, be it to our physical health, vision, mental health etc.

Many people when being told to expose to some sunlight, the response will be: nah, it will promote skin cancer!

It's really sad that we are being taught to be afraid of the sun, the source of living energy on earth. Well, its not that we are asked to be under the sun for hours until you get burnt, but at least 15 to 30 minutes of sunbathing a day is good to our health.

Here's some highlights and benefits of the sunlight to us:
1. Exposure to the sun enable our body to synthesize Vitamin D, which is a free source. You do not need to pay for the sunlight and you do not have to buy from the store/pharmacy. There is no side effect of man-made supplement.

2. Low Vitamin D level is associated with worse asthma. According to a study conducted by researchers from National Jewish Health in Denver and published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, asthmatics with low levels of vitamin D may suffer more severely from the disease than patients with sufficient levels of the vitamin.

3. Sunscreen blocks the UV radiation necessary for the body to synthesize vitamin D. And research showed that Vitamin D will decrease possibility of getting cancer by 70%.

4. Sunscreen can harm our skin and body as it contains dozens of chemicals and carcinogens that are highly absorb-able by the skin and go to our liver which become a burden for the organ to expel these toxins. And if these toxins were not able to be expelled and were accumulated near the skin, it resulted in skin cancer! (not prevent skin cancer!!)

5. Vitamin D helps to regulate immune system and prevent against chronic health conditions such as heart disease, dementia and cancer.

6. According to a study conducted by researchers from the Medical University of Graz, Austria, and published in the journal Clinical Endocrinology, by increasing circulating levels of vitamin D, sunbathing may help increase men's testosterone levels and thereby their sex drive.

7. Tanning effect is the best sunscreen naturally to block off the UV-a and UV-b.

8. Sunlight is actually beneficial to our vision. According to Bate's Method, one of the activities for vision improvement is sunning, where the head is turned towards the sun with eyes closed and let it bathed under the sun for several minutes a day.

Benefits of Spirulina

I made this quick benefit list for my husband, who always refuses to eat greens and whatever that is foreign to him, including fruits that he was not introduced to since childhood. To compensate the absence of greens and many good foods in his diet, I'm trying to introduce some spirulina to him to ensure he is getting some good nutrients for his health. 聯合國通過佛教慈濟基金會成為聯合國經濟及社會理事會 特殊諮詢委員

聯合國(UN)於台灣時間昨晚(七月十九日)十一點,紐約時間(七月十九日)上午十一點鐘召開經濟及社會理事會大會,會中正式通過「佛教慈濟基金會」(Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation)成為「聯合國經濟及社會理事會非政府組織的特殊諮詢委員」(NGO in Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC)。美國慈濟基金會紐約分會執行長張濟舵出席這項大會,並將這項好消息傳回慈濟台灣總會。

經濟及社會理事會的特殊諮詢委員將可以參與聯合國經濟及社會理事會及其相關的機構的各項重要事務、計畫、預算之推動,提供諮詢與服務給聯合國秘書長,各國政府與其他非政府組織。

聯合國經濟及社會理事會這一次通過佛教慈濟基金會作為其特殊諮詢委員,是肯定慈濟在全球超過七十個國家的慈善與醫療等重大貢獻。特別是近年的海地、智利地震,四川地震、南亞海嘯等重大災難,慈濟志工都是走在最前,做到最後,以平等大愛的精神協助災後重建。

在全世界各重要的NGO組織當中,不乏具有基督教與回教精神的組織,而慈濟以務實的行動,將佛教的平等大愛散佈到全世界各個苦難的角落,這是具有其特殊的意義。聯合國經濟及社會理事會長期注意到慈濟在全球的慈善行動,這次賦予其特殊諮詢委員的地位,表示肯定,亦期許慈濟根據過去四十多年所累積的經驗、所依循的法則,繼續盡地球公民之責執行各項任務,也促使聯合國「千年發展目標」(MDG)之達成,奉獻一已之力。。

未來佛教慈濟基金會將獲准參與經濟及社會理事會的各項會議,提供口頭與書面之建議。同樣的慈濟在全球的人道慈善行動也將獲得聯合國的各相關組織之協助與必要之安全保護。

當這項消息宣佈後,美國總會透過越洋電話將訊息傳回花蓮本會。證嚴上人感動聯合國經濟及社會理事會給予的殊榮,也在今天早晨七點鐘向全球會眾開示:「慈濟人應肩負起無疆界眾生的責任,將全球發生的苦難都視為一己的使命,經由慈悲善行,體現佛陀無緣大慈的精神,將平等大愛廣披世界寰宇。

Your Baby Loves What You Eat When Pregnant and Breastfeeding

At the Monell Chemical Senses Centre in Philadelphia they were researching to see if what the mother ate affected the lifelong food and flavour preferences in their babies. Dr Mennella had a group made up of pregnant and nursing mothers carrot juice every day. Once eating food the children who were exposed to the taste of carrots through the amniotic fluid or breast milk were much keener on carrots than those whose mothers had not drunk carrot juice!

A similar study was then done on peaches and found the same result.

Then a third where breastfeeding mothers whose babies were startig to eat solids but hated green beans had a turn around once the mother started eating them too (and passed on the proof she was in her breast milk)!

Julie Mennella, who carried out the study, said: "Flavours from the mother's diet are transmitted through amniotic fluid and mother's milk. A baby learns to like a food's taste when the mother eats that food on a regular basis."

So if you want to help your children be healthy and enjoy healthy foods start early by taking excellent care of yourself!! Dr Mennella said: "If mothers want their babies to learn to like to eat vegetables, especially green vegetables, they need to provide them with opportunities to taste these foods."

美國媽媽如何教育孩子

朋友電郵了這一篇文章給我,我覺得值得給自己留個提醒,所以也上載在這兒讓大家參考。

教育,確實是一件不容易但又很重要的事情。要是大人沒有抓到孩子的脾性而好好教養孩子做人的道理、好的生活習慣,孩子就無法成就一個完整獨立的人格。這樣的影響是孩子的一生。

疼愛有長遠的眼光,以樹立孩子的人格為目標
寵愛是無止境的溺愛,會讓孩子無法成長。

一個星期前,我給孩子穿褲子時他不讓,還哭得特別大聲,褲子穿好后,他還扭著哭不停,而且越哭越大聲,甚至哭喊。我本來就是不理他,以爲他哭一會了以後就會停,誰知他不停,還越哭越起勁。最後,沒有辦法,我去把他拉過來想要跟他講道理,他就是不聼,直到他的爸爸來抱他出去,找東西給他玩。那一天過後,他每晚睡覺都不安穩,尤其當半夜起來要喝奶卻等太久時,他就開始大聲的哭泣。我一時也想不到爲何他那麽不安,還以爲是不舒服了。直到前兩天我才發現,原來是那一次的經驗導致這樣的情形。我媽說,盡量不要讓他哭,他不高興的時候,就找別的東西來分他的心。先生也說孩子要哄,轉移注意力后一下子就沒事了。。。我想,每個孩子都有他自己的個性和處理事情的反應。當然,從他出世開始,大人的處世態度和方式也有直接的影響。

身教是最重要的一環。當大人有正的動作時,小孩學到的就是正像的。所以,當孩子不乖或被認爲是問題孩子時,先該反省的,應該是帶孩子的大人。

儿子去美国留学,毕业后定居美国。还给我找了个洋媳妇苏珊。 如今,小孙子托比已经3岁了。今年夏天,儿子为我申请 了探亲签证。在美国待了三个月,洋媳妇苏珊教育孩子的方法, 令我这个中国婆婆大开眼界。

不吃饭就饿着

每天早上,托比醒来后,苏珊把早餐往餐桌上一放,就自顾 自 地忙去了。托比会自己爬上凳子,喝牛奶,吃面包片。吃饱 后,他回自己的房间,在衣柜里找衣服、鞋子,再自己穿上。 毕竟托比只有3岁,还搞不清楚子的正反面,分不清鞋子 的左右脚。有一次托比又把裤子穿反了,我赶紧上前想帮他 换,却被苏珊制止了。她说,如果他觉得不舒服,会自己脱 下来,重新穿好;如果他没觉得有什么不舒服,那就随他的 便。那一整天,托比反穿着裤子跑来跑去,苏姗像没看见一样。

又一次,托比出去和邻居家的小朋友玩,没多大会就气喘吁 吁 地跑回家,对苏珊说:“妈妈,露西说我的裤子穿反了,真 的吗?”露西是邻居家的小姑娘,今年5岁。苏姗笑着说: “是的,你要不要换回来?”托比点点头,自己脱下裤子, 仔细看了看,重新穿上了。从那以后,托比再也没穿反过裤子。

我不禁想起,我的外孙女五六岁时不会用筷子,上小学时不 会 系鞋带。如今在上寄宿制初中的她,每个周末都要带回家一大堆 脏衣服呢。

一天中午,托比闹情绪,不肯吃饭。苏珊说了他几句,愤怒 地 小托比一把将盘子推到了地上,盘子里的食物洒了一地。苏 姗看着托比,认真地说:“看来你确实不想吃饭!记住,从 现在到明天早上,你什么都不能吃。”托比点点头,坚定地 回答:“Yes!”我在心里暗笑,这母子俩,还都挺倔!

下午,苏珊和我商量,晚上由我做中国菜。我心领神会,托 比 告别爱吃中国菜,一定是苏珊觉得托比中午没好好吃饭,想让他 晚上多吃点儿。

那天晚上我施展厨艺,做了托比最爱吃的糖醋里脊、油闷大 虾, 还用意大利面做了中国式的凉面。托比最喜欢吃那种凉面,小小 的人可以吃满满一大盘。

开始吃晚饭了,托比欢天喜地地爬上凳子。苏珊却走过来, 拿 走了他的盘子和刀叉,说:“我们已经约好了,今天你不能 吃饭,你自己也答应了的。”托比看着面容严肃的妈妈,“哇” 地一声在哭起来,边哭边说:“妈妈,我饿,我要吃饭。”“不 行,说过的话要算数。”苏珊毫不心软。

我心疼了,想替托比求情,说点好话,却见儿子对我使眼色 。 想起我刚到美国时,儿子就跟我说,在美国,父母教育孩子 时,别人千万不要插手,即使是长辈也不例外。无奈,我只好保 持沉默。

那顿饭,从始至终,可怜的小托比一直坐在玩具车里,眼巴 巴 地看着我们三个大人狼吞虎咽。我这才明白苏珊让我做中餐 的真正用意。我相信,下一次,托比想发脾气扔饭碗时,一 定会想起自己饿着肚子看爸爸妈妈和奶奶享用美食的经历。 饿着肚子的滋味不好受,况且还是面对自己最喜爱的食物。

临睡前,我和苏珊一起去向托比道晚安。托比小心翼翼地问 : “妈妈,我很饿,现在我能吃中国面吗?”苏珊微笑着摇摇 头,坚决地说:“不!”托比叹了口气,又问:“那等我睡 完觉睁开眼睛时,可以吃吗?”“当然可以。”苏珊温柔地回 答。托比甜甜地笑了。

大部分情况下,托比吃饭都很积极,他不想因为“罢吃”而 错 过食物,再受饿肚子的苦。每当看到托比埋头大口大口地吃 饭,嘴上脸上粘的都是食物时,我就想起外孙女。她像托比 这么大时,为了哄她吃饭,几个大人端着饭碗跟在她屁股后 面跑,她还不买账,还要谈条件:吃完这碗买一个玩具,再吃一 碗买一个玩具……

以其人之道,还治其人这身

有一天,我们带托比去公园玩。很快,托比就和两个女孩儿 玩 起了厨房游戏。塑料小锅、小铲子、小盘子、小碗摆了一地。 忽然,淘气的托比拿起小锅,使劲在一个女孩儿头上敲了 一下,女孩儿愣了一下,放声大哭。另一个女孩儿年纪更小 一些,见些情形,也被吓得大哭起来。大概托比没想到会有这么 严重的后果,站在一旁,愣住了。

苏珊走上前,开清了事情的来龙去脉后,她一声不吭,拿起 小 锅,使劲敲到托比的头上,托比没防备,一下子跌坐在草地 上,哇哇大哭起来。苏珊问托比:“疼吗?下次还这样吗?” 托比一边哭,一边拼命摇头。我相信他以后再也不会这么做了。

托比的舅舅送了他一辆浅蓝色的小自行车,托比非常喜欢, 当 成宝贝,不许别人碰。邻居小姑娘露西是托比的好朋友,央求托 比好几次,要骑他的小车,托比都没答应。

一次,几个孩子一起玩时,露西趁托比不注意,偷偷骑上小 车, 扬长而去。托比发现后,气愤地跑来向苏珊告状。苏珊正 和几个孩子的母亲一起聊天喝咖啡,便微笑着说:“你们的事情 自己解决,妈妈可管不了。”托比无奈地走了。

过了一小会儿,露西骑着小车回来了。托比看到露西,一把 将 她推倒在地,抢过了小车。露西坐在地上大哭起来。苏珊抱 起露西,安抚了她一会儿。很快,露西就和别的小朋友兴高采烈 地玩了起来。

托比自己骑了会车,觉得有些无聊,看到那几个孩子玩得那 么 高兴,他想加入,又觉得有些不好意思。他蹭到苏珊身边, 嘟囔道:“妈妈,我想跟露西他们一起玩。”苏珊不动声色 地说:“那你自己去找他们啦!”“妈妈,你陪我一起去。” 托比恳求道。“那可不行,刚才是你把露西弄哭的,现在你又想 和大家玩,就得自己去解决问题。”

托比骑着小车慢慢靠近露西,快到她身边时,又掉头回来。 来 回好几次,不知道从什么时候开始,托比和露西又笑逐颜开,闹 成了一团。

管教孩子是父母的事

苏珊的父母住在加利福尼亚州,听说我来了,两人开车来探 望 我们。家里来了客人,托比很兴奋,跑上跑下地乱窜。他把 玩沙子用的小桶装满了水,提着小桶在屋里四处转悠。苏珊 警告了她好几次,不要把水洒到地板上,托比置若罔闻。最 后,托比还是把水桶弄倒了,水洒了一地。兴奋的小托比不 觉得自己做错了事,还得意地光着脚丫踩水玩,把裤子全弄 湿了。我连忙找出拖把准备拖地。苏珊从我手中抢过拖把交 给托比,对他说:“把地拖干,把湿衣服脱下来,自己洗干 净。”托比不愿意,又哭又闹。苏珊二话不说,直接把他拉 到贮藏室,关了禁闭。听到托比在里面发出惊天动地的哭喊, 我心疼坏了,想进去把他抱出来。托比的外婆却拦住我,说: “这是苏珊的事。”

过了一会儿,托比不哭了,他在贮藏室里大声喊:“妈妈, 我 错了。”苏珊站在门外,问:“那你知道该怎么做了吗?” “我知道。”苏珊打开门,托比从贮藏室走出来,脸上还挂 着两行泪珠。他拿起有他两个高的拖把吃力地把地上的水拖 干净。然后,他脱下裤子,拎在手上,光着屁股走进洗手间,稀 里哗啦地洗起衣服来。

托比的外公外婆看着表情惊异的我,意味深长地笑了。这件 事 让我感触颇深。在很多中国家庭,父母管教孩子时,常常会 引起“世界大战”,往往是外婆外公护,爷爷奶奶拦,夫妻吵 架,鸡飞狗跳。

后来,我和托比的外公外婆聊天时,提到这件事,托比的外 公 说了一段话,让我印象深刻。他说,孩子是父母的孩子,首 先要尊重父母对孩子的教育方式。孩子虽然小,却是天生的 外交家,当他看到家庭成员之间出现分歧时,他会很聪明地 钻空子。这不仅对改善他的行为毫无益处,反而会导致问题 越来越严重,甚至带来更多别的问题。而且,家庭成员之间 发生冲突,不和谐的家庭氛围会带给孩子更多的不安全感, 对孩子的心理发展产生不利影响。所以,无论是父辈与祖辈 在教育孩子的问题上发生分歧,还是夫妻两人的教育观念有差 异,都不能在孩子面前发生冲突。

托比的外公外婆在家里住了一周,准备回加利福尼亚了。临 走 前两天,托比的外公郑重地问女儿:“托比想要一辆玩具挖 掘机,我可以买给他吗?”苏珊想了想,说:“你们这次来, 已经送给他一双旱冰鞋作为礼物了,到圣诞节时,再买玩具挖掘 机当礼物送给他吧!”

我不知道托比的外公是怎么告诉小家伙的,后来我带托比去 超 市,他指着玩具挖掘机说:“外公说,圣诞节时,给我买这个当 礼物。”语气里满是欣喜和期待。

虽然苏珊对托比如此严格,托比去却对妈妈爱得不得了。他 在 外面玩时,会采集一些好看的小花或者他认为漂亮的叶子, 郑重其事地送给妈妈;别人送给他礼物,他会叫妈妈和他一起拆 开;有什么好吃的,也总要留一半给妈妈。

想到很多中国孩子对父母的漠视与冷淡,我不得不佩服我的 洋 媳妇。在我看来,在教育孩子的问题上,美国妈妈有很多值得中 国妈妈学习的地方

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber.� Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower?� Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds?� Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long.� The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

Is Cows Milk Good for Us?

Do we ever see any species nourish on other species' milk? I think apart from man-made occasion, human beings is the only species on earth that is feeding our babies with milk from other species, and with claims that they are better than our own human milk.

Humans being claimed as the one with wisdom on earth, and yet we do things the reverse way... Irony isn't?

Apparently, those people who rigorously promoting cow's milk over breastmilk for infant consumption is looking for good profit because they cannot make money out of mother's milk. Yup, when we breastfeed, we save thousands of dollars from buying formula/cow's milk and from health problem cause by cow's milk. The only person making money from this is the breastpump seller, which is only one time deal throughout the breastfeeding period.

Is cow's milk not good? Definitely not, cow's milk is the best for the calf. It is just not the best for human infant.

There are more and more scientific facts about why cow's milk is not the best for human consumption over these years. These reports just couldn't make themselves easily available for the public by the big milk company.

Cow's milk is not only not the best food for human infant; it is not the perfect food for human adult as well.

Below are some facts about cow's milk:
1. China Study - animal protein/casein can turn on cancer activity in our body
2. animal protein is mucus forming (so next time when you drink orange juice and develop phlegm, don't blame it on orange juice, you now know who's the culprit)
3. Cow's milk goes through many processes such as pasteurization, heating process and homogenization that alter the protein and fat structure and affects its nutritional value as well as digestion
4. the protein content has 80% casein 20% whey, comparing with mother's milk 40% casein 60% whey, is harder to be digested by babies
5. cow's milk has high saturated fat and very low essential fatty acids that is critical for babies' growth
6. cow's milk contains little amount of vitamin E, C, B and trace mineral
7. it doesn't have good bacteria for babies' guts like mother's milk
8. cow's milk does not build bone, instead the animal protein leach calcium from the bone. Study shown that those who get the most calcium from dairy products received no benefit and actually broke more bones than those who got little or no calcium from dairy. [1]
9. cows grown for milk live under stressed condition due to over-milk, diseases and infections. Milk from these cow are often loaded with variety of hormones, antibiotics and drugs.

For those who love and enjoy drinking milk, you can try non-dairy milk such as almond nut milk, sesame/pumpkin/sunflower seeds milk instead. It provides you good fat, plant-base protein and better absorption of calcium without the negative effects of dairy products.

How does MSG and Aspartame Affect our Health - Summary

I realized that the previous write up on summary from Dr. Blaylock about MSG is too long for some people to finish reading it. Here’s the simple conclusion I made from the article, to enable easier guidelines for everyone:

1. MSG can cause obesity, diarrhea, upset stomach, irritable bowel or reflux in mild effect.
2. MSG can cause serious problem such as sudden cardiac death, destroy nervous system, dementia and brain atrophy.
3. MSG can be camouflaged in other names such as yeast extract/enzymes, soy protein isolates, hydrolyzed protein and caseinate, soy extract, soy broth, that are found in many vegetarian health foods as well as infant and toddlers foods.
4. Soy Infant formula contains unhealthy fluoride level, manganese level and glutamate levels. Mothers of vegetarian/lactose intolerant-babies, please be extra careful when choosing soy infant formula. Breastfeeding is the best!!
5. Glutamate from natural food, when consumed as whole food (not extracted) is harmless.
6. Most of the local restaurants add MSG in their cuisine. If any restaurants said “free of MSG” it only means they didn’t put in there themselves. This is due to many sources/flavoring they buy are with unknown ingredients.
7. Aspartame is linked to lymphoma and leukemia related cancer.
8. Aspartame is DNA damaging and make cancer grow very rapidly

Please make an effort to avoid taking food with MSG and aspartame for our own health sake. Natural whole food is the best and home cuisine is the best!

一名年輕比丘跟隨師父修行,常問師父:人生的價值為何?一日,師父拿出一顆石頭,要他拿到市集讓人出價。

某甲出價兩元,某乙看見說可做秤錘,出價十元;翌日比丘再到市集,多人圍觀讚歎石頭很美,當場有人出一千元高價,旁邊的人馬上出更高價錢競爭……最後,竟然喊到十萬元!

比丘不解,回去向師父報告。師父藉此機緣開示:「任何東西都有價值,包括石頭在內,端看如何運用。人生價值的高低,也不在於外在眼光,而在於我們給自己的評價——要具備珠寶商的眼光,發現自身寶藏,創造人生價值。」

多年前,一位居士送一顆方形的蛇紋石來花蓮;因精舍簡陋無處置放,就擱在大殿外的草坪。一位泰國法師來到精舍參訪,看到這塊「軟玉」,讚歎好美!遂以此致贈法師,他十分歡喜,說要帶回泰國雕成一尊玉佛。

人生的價值在於自我創造,這塊「軟玉」若一直閒置,永遠只是一塊石頭;雕成佛像讓人敬奉,價值就能發揮。

若根塵和意識糾纏、貪戀,模糊了判斷,會糟蹋自己內在最有價值的佛性。生命的價值可以擴大、可以加深,端看自我能否時時多用心!

Noni Fruit Juice - Is it really good for us?

I accidentally came across some articles and comments about noni juice last week and 2 days later, I received an email from a well-hearted friend sharing an article on the benefit of drinking noni fruits. It leads me to writing this...

It seems that the actual 'real' noni juice is very horrible tasting and the Tahitian only eat it for medical purposes. The juice is prepared by putting these weird-smelling noni fruits in a jar and let them ferment for several days before collecting the fermented juice. The smell is equalized to the smell of liquid that formed at the bottom of a trash container!! However, it is made palatable by adding a lot of sugar and unknown stuffs and sell it with very high price with claims of great values to justify for the price.

I have heard of noni juice since many years ago from friends and relatives. However, I was never paying any attention to it and never have a taste on it before. Anyhow, with so many claims that it is good for health, for years, I thought it is a good product for health until recently. Learning nutrition and in the path of looking for a natural way to achieve healthy living, this leads me to open my eyes to many products selling in the market to distinguish the bad from the bundles.

I personally do not have any experience with Noni Juice. Just would like to provide more information for everyone as reference. With so many scam and false information out there, we really need to choose carefully and wisely before spending our hard-earned money on things that might not benefit us, or could even cause harm to us.

How does MSG and Aspartame Affect our Health

MSG (monosodium glutamate) is a common name that most people familiar of. It is known that adding some MSG in the food during cooking can make the dish so much more delicious, and I suspect almost all foods that we buy from any restaurants and hawker stalls are MSG-added. The advertisements said it enhances the taste of the dishes while providing us amino acids that are needed by our body. Is it really so? Is it really harmless to our health?

Monosodium Glutamate is a sodium salt naturally occurring from non-essential amino acid, glutamic acid. However, the sodium salt is nothing but natural to our body when it is ingested in this form.

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that many uses as substitute of sugar in health products and diet foods. I have even seen many candies in the market that are using aspartame now a days instead of sugar, which is happily ingested by kids in daily basis, and 3-in-1 coffee that is very commonly consumed by working class and students.

I was reading the interview of Dr. Blaylock with Mike Adams [2] on the topics about MSG and Aspartame and I think many might be interested in the information revealed by him. Below are the extract from his sharing:

MSG:
1. When cancer cells were exposed to MSG, they become more mobile and that enhances metastasis or spread --> started moving through tissues

2. If a person has low level magnesium in his body, ingesting MSG will cause the level of glutamate in the blood rise as high as 20 to 40-fold and he is prone to sudden cardiac death. Other milder effects are diarrhea, upset stomach, irritable bowel or reflux.

3. Many food manufacturers substitute MSG with hydrolyzed protein and caseinate, soy extracts, soy broth, that are actually also source of glutamate. Some were even found in infant and toddlers foods.

4. Glutamate destroys nervous system

5. Early observation with exitotoxicity of glutamate is obesity. MSG-exposed animals is found to prefer carbohydrates and sugar-rich foods.

6. Yeast extracts, soy extracts and soy protein isolates, which are found in lots of vegetarian health foods, contain high levels of glutamate.

7. In a 25-year study done, people who consumed the most soy products were followed for 25 years and did serial CT scans of their brain. It is found that the people who consumed the most soybean products had the greatest incidence of dementia (癡呆) and brain atrophy (shrinking brain that might bring to decrease in functionally of the brain).

8. In natural food (such as tomatoes), all types of glutamate are bound in amino acids grouping and we absorb it slowly as combined amino acids that is broken down in the liver where it's released in very low concentrations that the body can deal with.

9. When we hydrolyze these proteins or use yeast extract/enzymes to break down these proteins into free released amino acids, they are no longer natural. When they enter our GI tract, they are absorbed as free amino acids and cause the glutamate level in the blood goes up significantly. Our body and blood brain barrier is not constructed to handle such high levels of glutamate.

10. Magnesium can block glutamate receptor and naturally reduces toxicity. Antioxidant is powerful at inhibiting excitotoxicity. Combination of B vitamins also block excitotoxicity.

11. Usually restaurants buy their sauces in bulk with no ingredients listed. "Free of MSG" means they didn't put in there themselves.

12. Infant formula: concern about fluoride level, manganese level and the glutamate levels in the soy infant formulas.

13. we are all exposed to toxins in the modern living -- mercury, aluminum, pesticides, herbicides that produce brain damage through an excitotoxic mechanism. When we add MSG to the foods, we tremendously accelerate this toxicity. That's why we see this explosion in neurodegenerative diseases; Alzheimer's and autism and Parkinson's.


Aspartame:
1. When animals being fed with aspartame throughout their lives and let them die a natural death, a dramatic and statistically significant increase in the related cancers of lymphoma and leukemia is found. This is the same effect as exposure to the same doses of formaldehyde (classified by WHO in June 1994 as a known human carcinogen associated with nasal sinus cancer and nasopharyngeal cancer, and possibly with leukemia [1])

2. If you just drink a single diet cola today or sweeten something with NutraSweet (a brand of aspartame), you are accumulating damage everyday. Eventually you are going to produce this necessary pattern of DNA damage to initiate the cancer. Then the aspartic acid component of aspartame will make the cancer grow very rapidly. --> Aspartame causes cancer, and making the cancer multiply very rapidly.


Advice from Dr. Blaylock:
We need to abstain from all these things. Aspartame is not a necessary nutrient and neither is MSG. If you want to avoid obesity, metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, and if you don't want to make your cancer more aggressive, then you need to stay away from these products. The damage affects pregnant women, unborn babies and newborns. It can produce changes in the brain that are irreversible, depending on when it is stopped. It is found it reprograms the wiring of the brain, particularly the hypothalamus, so it doesn't function normally. These children are abnormal for the rest of their lives in terms of their physiological function.

生機飲食是健康的重要因素之一

對食物充滿好奇的十三個月

寶寶已經超過十三個月大了。現在的他,忽然對我們的盤中的食物很有興趣。只要是我們放進嘴巴吃的,他都會一直念“mum mum",看著盤裏的食物,要求我們給他吃。如果我們沒有理他,他就會開始大聲抗議。他饞嘴的樣子真的好可愛!

但是,我這個推動生機飲食的媽媽就開始頭疼了。因爲我們家裏的大人,都還不能完全生機飲食,這樣就無法給寶寶一個很好的榜樣,那該如何是好?

之前,我還可以事先在家準備好他的食物,帶在身邊,當我們外出用餐時,寶寶也有他自己的一份餐點可以吃。但是,現在的他好聰明,只選擇我們吃的東西,我們沒有吃的他都不要。

唯一的辦法,就是盡量讓自己吃的都是適合寶寶吃的食物,那就可以減少讓他進食低能量、沒有營養的食物。比如,外出晚餐,我就要一份生菜做的三明治、或是水果、蔬菜沙拉、果汁或酸乳酪果汁等,這樣我邊吃,還可以邊喂他,這樣的晚餐寶寶會很滿意,大人也會很吃得很安心、開心。

在馬來西亞,其實我們可以很方便的買得到好多健康的食物,比如椰子、榴蓮、芒果、木瓜等。。。這些都是可以在街邊、巴刹買得到的很普遍的食物。對於小孩,甚至剛開始吃固體的小寶寶,都是很好的選擇和營養來源。只要媽媽們稍微用點兒心思,寶寶也可以吃得很健康。更重要的是,大人們要做孩子的好榜樣,千萬不要在寶寶面前吃垃圾零食(如果真的非吃不可,可以不在寶寶的視線範圍内吃),因爲這樣的榜樣也會養成寶寶將來吃零食的習慣。假如真得要吃零食,可以自己在家準備健康的零食,比如葡萄乾、乾果、葵花子、水果、小番茄、黃瓜(切便)等。大人和小孩都可以隨手拿來吃,那樣就可以減少吃垃圾零食的機會了。

在百喻經中有一則很有趣的短文──有一位父親,年老多病,但是他很有錢、財產很多。老人有兩個兒子,當他病重時很掛慮那些財產,於是說:「將來我要把財產分給這兩個兒子,不過,一定要分得很公平。」到底要怎麼分法?他說:「請我們族裡年齡最長的長輩來做公平的見證人。」交代之後老人就過世了。

他的兒子想,父親交代過財產要好好公平分配,必須趕快請長輩來做公證人,看如何能公平分配。老人來了就說:「要把任何事都處理得很公平,唯有一個方法,就是把每樣財產(物品)都分成兩半。」這聽起來似乎很有道理。於是就請人來幫忙,把每樣東西都分兩半──衣服撕成一半一半的,碗、盤也都切分成兩半,傢俱也分兩半,一切都分成兩半。

這雖是一則短文,但是意義深遠。世間物究竟要怎麼才能分毫不差而且完整又公平呢?實在是不可得啊!世上無法做到這樣的程度,若一定要如此,那一切都要被破壞,不得完整啊!人與人之間多方計較,有什麼能保持完整呢?

心能知足,一切就會公平;心能知足,會覺得一切都很富有,所以一切唯心啊!學佛就是要學這一點──心中覺得一切都很富有、很滿足,不管是增或減,都應該很歡喜地接受。

今生能聚在一起,是累積過去生的那份緣與情,未來還有很長的路要走,所以,大家要很珍惜現在的這份緣,彼此之間要互相關懷、互相敬愛,常常自我警惕!不要計較,計較就是吃虧,愈是計較,所得的愈不完整,計較到後來,什麼都得不到!



後記 小小心得:
總覺得只有生活得不計較,才能輕安自在。
小時候,自從我有自己的一閒睡房開始,記得自己總是很計較有沒有人進過我的房間、動過我的東西。每天放學回來,縂要先看看房間有沒有不一樣,就是害怕姐妹會進來亂動我的東西。對於‘我的’都很執著。這樣的情形一直維持到我上大學后,由於長時間不在家,很多東西放著沒用,而且也顧不到了以後,忽然才對這‘屬於我的’的觀念放開了。到後來,甚至把房間讓給了小妹用。那個時候,由於來回家裏和讀書的地方,慢慢地覺悟很多事情都不是恒常的,也不專屬自己的,我們只能發揮我們的使用權。所以心胸也就開闊了很多。

現在,我們家的生活當中已經少了這一分的計較,更重要的是讓物品發揮它的良能,大家都懂得惜物惜福,生活真得輕鬆自在許多。

花很多錢卻尋找不到健康?

昨天晚上差不多入睡的時候,忽然腦海裏出現一個建議。。。既然那麽多人對我的生機飲食有興趣,也許我可以辦一些示範課程把我所學會的和大家一起分享,同時可以讓大家了解生機飲食其實可以很容易且經濟地融入生活當中。或許這樣可以鼓勵更多的人吃得更健康,活得更歡喜。

開始對營養有興趣,應該是在大學時代吧!那時零零碎碎的讀些報章的資料,還有Ann Wigmore的書,開始有些啓發。但是那個時候常常遇到不同的資料來源有互相衝突的意見,不曉得該聼誰的。直到工作以後,一直嘗試尋找一個可靠的營養課程來進修。但是普通上的營養課程就是現在科學研發出來的,並不是生機飲食的營養。。。尋找了許久后,才找到管道開始較有系統的學習。這些年來,從基本對人體的知識了解后,懂得分析怎麽樣的飲食才是真正對健康有益,什麽樣的營養道理是不圓滿或不需要顧慮的等等。

最近這兩年,因爲自己不斷的研修,對生機飲食的實踐更有了進一步的發展。也在這兩年,很實在的運用了我這一方面的知識,同時看到很好的效果。懷孕、生小孩、哺乳這些過程,也讓我明白了普遍上西醫給於關於營養的意見,其實不需要太在意的,因爲西醫的營養學問在求學時期只佔了醫學係的很小很小的學分,而且也是根據西醫的營養觀為出發點,並不能真正的給于我們很大的幫助。我在細心觀察自己的身體下,就是跟著生機飲食的方法度過這幾個過程。如今,寶寶已經一嵗了,還在哺乳,而且寶寶在媽媽的哺乳和生機飲食的照顧下,健康且活潑,這也足以證明了,真正的健康,來自于我們的飲食習慣,而不是西藥和人造營養補助品的照顧,蔬菜水果只要用得法,可以是我們的健康的來源。

常常看到很多的媽媽,因爲寶寶或家裏的小孩病了又病,看了醫生,抗生素未吃完,又要再去看醫生,吃更多的抗生素;而大人爲了讓小孩沒完沒了的病快快好起來,把一顆又一顆的抗生素和西藥往寶寶嘴裏塞;如此,不只錢花多了,對寶寶的健康沒有真正的幫助,同時寶寶難過,大人也辛苦疲勞。聼了也心疼。。。

健康,本是人人應該擁有的財產。可是,自從西方科技發達,人們的生活變得更文明以後,健康卻成了奢侈品,生病似乎變成了大家的生活伴侶;不知不覺中,人們開始把自己的健康交給了陌生的醫生和西藥,醫藥費成了一個家庭必須要承擔的其中一個生活開銷。問題到底出現在哪裏?我們如何再次把自己的健康找回來?其實,答案很簡單,就在我們的生活和飲食習慣中。

生命的第一年

今天孩子滿一周歲了。

時間真得過得很快,轉眼槺已經一嵗了。
去年的今天,記憶猶深。
看著他一天一天的長大,每天學會一些新東西,
這樣的經驗,還蠻有趣的。

一嵗的他,今早起床后,知道媽咪爹地還未醒來,他還懂得輕聲細語自己玩。
過後,知道媽咪已經醒來了,才來找媽咪要喝奶。

時間與記憶

一直都很想要寫一個屬於自己的部落格,摘錄心情和際遇,但是,遲遲未有行動。。。也許有太多的藉口可以用吧!今天,多虧一個朋友的鼓勵,終于行動為自己開啓了一個屬於自己的電子空間。

好久沒有動筆寫文章了。寫起來,感覺怪怪的,也一時之間不曉得要寫些什麽。

時間的飛逝,總是那麽的無情。想要記錄下來的生活的那一刹那,過了以後,就是等待、等待,然後就漸漸被遺忘了。

孩子出生的時候,想寫部落格記錄當時初爲人母的心情。。。沒有行動。。。
孩子滿月了,也想寫下孩子的點點滴滴。。。沒有行動。。。
孩子學翻身了,很想記錄那一刻的興奮與情景。。。沒有行動。。。
孩子長牙齒了,好想記下來那兩顆牙齒帶給我們的歡喜。。。沒有行動。。。
孩子學會坐起來了,想要為孩子記下他的成長過程。。。沒有行動。。。
孩子牙牙學語,嘗試和我們溝通了,那一份期待的心情很想寫下來。。。沒有行動。。。
。。。

就這樣,一年過去了。。。

原來,
時間可以纍計囘憶,
也可以淡化記憶。。。
